On the bad days, the big advice doesn’t reach me. Nobody wants to hear “take care of yourself” when getting out of bed already feels like a lot.
What helps are the small things. Most of them are so small they feel a little silly to write down.
A fresh cup of coffee. Not a whole routine, just one cup, or 10. I love my coffee.
Opening a window or stepping outside for a minute, even if I go right back in.
A shower, or if that’s too much, washing my face, brushing my teeth and changing my shirt.
Putting on a playlist I’ve heard a hundred times. Nothing new, nothing that asks anything of me. I can sing along.
Texting one person. It doesn’t have to be about how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s just “hey.”
Eating something. Toast counts. So does dark chocolate, Ice cream, and whatever else puts a smile on your face.
None of these fix the day. That isn’t the point. They just get me from one hour to the next, and some days that’s the whole job.
If you’re in one of those days right now, pick one small thing. Just one. Then let that be enough for a while.
And if it’s worse than a bad day, If it’s bad right now has people you can reach tonight.
I’ll send the next one. You can leave whenever you want.
